Before the civil war, the Syrian government produced around 400,000 barrels of oil per day, but currently, the country produces only 100,000 barrels, 75% of which are controlled by Kurds and US companies in areas occupied during the civil war. The 75,000 barrels produced annually in these occupied areas are just a fraction of the 370,000 produced 15 years ago in the same fields.
The US, producing over 13 million barrels per day, has no economic reason to continue guarding these fields other than to starve the Syrian regime.
Similarly, Syria has significant natural gas reserves, producing around 9 BCM annually before the war, with over 7.5 BCM coming from fields now occupied by the SDF and US allies.
